The International Cricket Council (ICC) has delivered a strong message to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The global body has rejected Bangladesh’s request to shift its T20 World Cup matches out of India and has warned of points deduction if the team refuses to play at the scheduled venues.
According to reports, the ICC made its position clear during a recent virtual meeting. The council stated that Bangladesh must travel to India and participate in the tournament as planned. Otherwise, the team will forfeit points for the respective matches. However, BCB sources say they have not yet received formal written communication from the ICC.
BCB Sought Venue Change Citing Security Concerns
The Bangladesh Cricket Board had earlier requested the ICC to allow its matches to be held outside India. The board cited security concerns for players amid rising political tensions. Moreover, Bangladesh asked the ICC to consider a hybrid model, similar to the one used earlier for Pakistan.
However, the ICC firmly ruled out this option. It made it clear that there would be no change in venues or match schedules for the T20 World Cup.
Tensions Rise Between BCCI and BCB
Relations between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the BCB have worsened in recent weeks. The situation escalated after reports of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh triggered criticism in India.
Following these developments, the BCCI reportedly directed the removal of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad. In response, the Bangladesh government imposed a ban on IPL broadcasts in the country. As a result, the cricketing dispute has now crossed into political territory.
Mustafizur Joins PSL Amid Controversy
After withdrawing from the IPL, Mustafizur Rahman joined the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Meanwhile, the controversy continues to grow, further straining ties between the two boards.
BCB director Farooq Ahmed said politics played a major role in the current situation. He expressed concern that non-cricket issues had entered the sport. He also warned that such developments could harm international cricket relations.
Bangladesh Faces Tough Decision
With the ICC clearly rejecting the hybrid model, Bangladesh now faces a critical choice. If the team refuses to play in India, it risks losing valuable points in the World Cup standings. On the other hand, complying with the ICC directive could invite domestic criticism.
As the ICC stands firm, all eyes are now on the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s next move. The decision could have a lasting impact on Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign and its relationship with global cricket authorities.
