IPL founder Lalit Modi, who is facing money laundering allegations and currently living in the United Kingdom, has issued an apology to the Government of India. His clarification came after a video featuring him with fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya went viral on social media, triggering sharp criticism.
Viral Video Sparks Outrage
Recently, Lalit Modi attended Vijay Mallya’s 70th birthday celebration in London. During the gathering, Modi recorded a video with Mallya and made sarcastic remarks, calling themselves the “biggest fugitives.” He also shared the video online with the caption, “Let’s break the internet down in India again.”
The video quickly went viral. As a result, netizens accused both Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya of mocking India after fleeing the country while facing serious financial crime charges.
Lalit Modi Issues Clarification
Following the backlash, Lalit Modi responded by apologising to the Indian government. He stated that he never intended to hurt public sentiments. Moreover, he clarified that people misunderstood his comments. Lalit Modi added that he holds great respect for India and its government.
MEA Reacts Strongly
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed strong objections to the remarks. The MEA reiterated that India is actively engaging with the UK government through diplomatic channels to bring back economic offenders like Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya to face legal proceedings.
