Blast Rocks Crowded Mosque During Evening Prayers
A deadly bomb blast struck a mosque in West African country of Nigeria on Wednesday evening, killing at least 10 worshippers. The incident occurred in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, while devotees were offering prayers inside a crowded mosque located in the Gamboru Market area.
Witnesses said a loud explosion shattered the calm during evening prayers, triggering panic among those inside the mosque. Several people suffered severe injuries, and officials fear the death toll could rise.
Suspected Suicide Attack or Planted Explosive
Security officials suspect that either a suicide bomber carried out the attack or militants planted an improvised explosive device inside the mosque. The explosion caused parts of the structure to collapse, while thick smoke filled the prayer hall, making escape difficult for many worshippers.
Emergency services rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals. Security forces sealed off the area and launched a detailed investigation.
No Claim of Responsibility Yet
So far, no terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, security agencies believe extremist groups such as Boko Haram or the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) may be behind the bombing. These groups continue to operate actively in Borno State.
Long-Running Insurgency in Nigeria
Nigeria has faced an Islamist insurgency since 2009. Militants aim to establish an Islamic state in the region. The conflict has killed nearly 40,000 people and displaced more than two million, according to official data.
Although Maiduguri had seen fewer attacks in recent years, the latest bombing has renewed fear among residents. Authorities have increased surveillance across the city following the incident.
Regional Security Concerns Grow
International agencies warn that extremist violence in northeastern Nigeria continues to spill into neighboring countries such as Niger and Chad. Despite a reported decline in attacks, the latest incident highlights ongoing security challenges in West Africa.
