The Union government announced the Padma Shri awards on Republic Day, honouring 45 individuals for outstanding service. Among the recipients, CCMB scientist Dr. Kumaraswami Thangaraj from Hyderabad received the prestigious civilian honour.
Dr. Thangaraj earned the award for his research on human evolution and genetic disorders. Over the years, his work helped explain population history and hereditary diseases in India. Moreover, his studies strengthened India’s standing in global scientific research.
Meanwhile, Mangipudi Rama Reddy from Telangana also received the Padma Shri. He earned recognition for his long-standing contribution to dairy development and animal husbandry. As a result, several rural communities benefited from improved livestock practices.
In addition, Rama Reddy supported farmers by promoting modern methods alongside traditional knowledge. Consequently, many families achieved better income stability and productivity.
The Padma Shri ranks as the fourth-highest civilian award in India. It recognises excellence in fields such as arts, education, science, medicine, sports, and social service.
Every year, the central government announces these awards on January 26. Later, the President of India presents them at Rashtrapati Bhavan during a formal ceremony.
