Former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu unveiled the statue of legendary singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam (SP Balu) at Ravindra Bharati in Hyderabad on Monday. The event paid a heartfelt tribute to one of India’s most celebrated playback singers.
Former Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, Telangana Minister Sridhar Babu, and BJP Telangana State President Ramachander Rao attended the ceremony. Artists, music lovers, and members of SP Balu’s family also took part in the programme.
The organisers installed a 7.2-foot bronze statue, which artisans specially crafted in East Godavari district, at the cultural venue. Ravindra Bharati holds a special place in Hyderabad’s artistic landscape and shares a deep connection with music and theatre.
As part of the celebrations, the organisers conducted colourful cultural programmes at the venue. They also hosted a special musical evening, where 50 singers performed 20 popular songs associated with SP Balasubrahmanyam. The performances moved the audience and revived memories of his golden voice.
Renowned singer and SP Balu’s sister S. P. Sailaja spoke at the event. She said that installing the statue at Ravindra Bharati fulfilled one of her brother’s last wishes. She recalled that SP Balu had once expressed his desire to have his statue placed there.
Sailaja also said that SP Balasubrahmanyam often urged people to stay disciplined and respect their roots. She added that he always encouraged everyone to cherish the Telugu language. The statue now stands as a lasting symbol of his musical legacy and cultural contribution.
