Vaikuntha Ekadashi is one of the most sacred days in Hindu tradition. Devotees observe a strict fast and offer special prayers to Lord Vishnu on this auspicious occasion. According to belief, sincere worship on this day helps remove life’s obstacles and leads the soul toward salvation.
Observed in the month of Margashirsha, Vaikuntha Ekadashi is also known as Moksha Ekadashi. Scholars say this day holds special importance for devotees who cannot observe all Ekadashi fasts during the year. Therefore, following the rituals correctly is essential.
How to Observe the Vaikuntha Ekadashi Fast
The fast begins on Dashami, the day before Ekadashi. Devotees should eat light food and maintain purity of mind and body. On Ekadashi day (December 30), one must wake up early, take a holy bath, and worship Lord Vishnu by chanting hymns and Vishnu Sahasranama.
Many devotees consume only water mixed with Tulsi leaves. Moreover, spiritual scholars advise spending the entire day in prayer, meditation, and chanting the Lord’s name. Visiting Vishnu temples and attending special pujas is considered highly auspicious.
What Not to Do on Vaikuntha Ekadashi
Devotees should avoid sleeping during the day. Cutting Tulsi leaves on Ekadashi is prohibited, so they should be plucked a day earlier. Mocking those who observe the fast is considered sinful. However, children, the elderly, and the sick are exempt from strict fasting.
If a parent’s death anniversary falls on Ekadashi, rituals should be performed on Dwadashi, as per scriptures.
Importance of Staying Awake at Night
Staying awake throughout the night and reading Vishnu-related Puranas is believed to bring spiritual merit. Drinking water is allowed, and Tulsi water can be consumed multiple times.
What to Do on Dwadashi
On the day after Ekadashi, devotees should bathe, worship Lord Vishnu, and break the fast by chanting “Govinda” three times. Eating simple food without salt or tamarind is advised. Donating food to the poor on Dwadashi is considered highly auspicious.
Devotees firmly believe that observing Vaikuntha Ekadashi with devotion opens the gates of Vaikuntha and grants divine blessings.
