Authorities are examining a proposal to construct a 14-kilometre elevated flyover in Vijayawada along the Hyderabad–Machilipatnam National Highway. The proposed structure would begin near Rajiv Gandhi Park and stretch across key junctions in the city. Officials believe this six-lane elevated corridor will resolve long-standing traffic bottlenecks within urban limits.

At present, the National Highway between Hyderabad and Vijayawada is undergoing expansion to six lanes. The National Highways Authority of India has agreed to extend the widening up to Kanaka Durga Flyover near Bhavanipuram. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this stretch has reached the final stage. Meanwhile, authorities are also pushing forward with the six-laning of the Vijayawada–Machilipatnam highway.

Why an Elevated Corridor Is Needed

Although the highway will have six lanes on both sides of the city, a four-lane stretch will remain between Kanaka Durga Flyover and the Davuluru toll plaza. This inconsistency has raised concerns over future congestion. Therefore, the government has shifted its focus to building a six-lane elevated flyover through the city to ensure seamless connectivity.

The proposed flyover would pass through Bhavanipuram, Krishnalanka, Varadhi, Benz Circle, Autonagar, Kanuru, Poranki, and Penamaluru before linking up near Ganguru junction. By elevating traffic above ground level, officials aim to ease pressure on city roads and reduce travel time for commuters heading toward Machilipatnam.

Strategic Urban Upgrade

Traffic flow in Vijayawada has increased sharply in recent years due to rapid urban expansion and industrial growth. Key junctions such as Benz Circle and Autonagar witness heavy congestion during peak hours. Consequently, planners consider the elevated flyover a long-term solution that will integrate smoothly with the six-lane national highway network.

Officials are currently preparing proposals for the elevated bridge from Kanaka Durga Flyover to Ganguru junction. Once approvals are secured, the project could transform road connectivity across the region. If implemented as planned, the six-lane elevated corridor will not only decongest city traffic but also strengthen the Hyderabad–Machilipatnam transport link.

With the DPR nearing completion and discussions progressing, residents and commuters now await formal clearance for what could become one of Vijayawada’s most significant infrastructure upgrades.
