A breakthrough occurred in the custodial torture case involving Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker and TDP MLA Raghurama Krishnam Raju. The case, which dates back to the previous YSRCP government, took a new turn today with the arrest of Bihar IG Sunil Nayak by Andhra Pradesh police.
Bihar IG Arrested for Custodial Violence
Sunil Nayak is one of the key accused in the case where Raghurama Krishnam Raju faced custodial violence. Authorities had repeatedly issued notices for his appearance in the investigation. However, Nayak did not respond. Consequently, Andhra Pradesh police travelled to Bihar and arrested him.
Guntur SP Vakul Jindal confirmed the arrest. Nayak is being brought from Patna to Guntur. Once he arrives, the police may present him to the Guntur court and request his remand. Investigations are ongoing against other accused, including IPS officer PV Sunil Kumar.
Background of the Raghurama Case
In 2021, Raghurama Krishnam Raju, then a rebel MP from the YSRCP, openly criticised Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Following this, the previous government lodged a sedition case against him and sent him to jail. After his arrest, CID officials allegedly assaulted him in custody in a pre-planned attack.
Raghurama filed a complaint regarding the custodial violence. The Supreme Court not only granted him bail but also ordered medical tests at Secunderabad Army Hospital, which confirmed that the assault had indeed occurred. However, the investigation stalled during the previous YSRCP administration. The current coalition government has now re-initiated the case and is pursuing it vigorously.
Accusations Against Sunil Nayak
Sunil Nayak, who was working in the CID at the time, allegedly played a key role in the attack on Raghurama. His arrest accelerates the investigation and is seen as a major step toward accountability. Reliable sources confirmed that Nayak had been evading the police, prompting a special team from Guntur to travel to Bihar to capture him.
Political and Police Reactions
The arrest of Sunil Nayak has become a hot topic in both political and police circles. Investigations against other senior officials involved in the custodial torture case continue. Police officials stated that bringing Nayak to Andhra Pradesh will help expedite the proceedings and ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable.
This development marks a crucial stage in the Raghurama custodial torture case. It underscores the state’s commitment to pursuing justice, even against high-ranking officials, and highlights the importance of accountability in law enforcement.
