Tirupati witnessed a protest highlighting the challenging conditions faced by petrol pump workers. CPI national leader Narayana led the demonstration near a petrol station on Renigunta Road, urging authorities to ensure minimum facilities for employees working at fuel stations across the country.
According to Narayana, India has over 1.25 lakh petrol pumps employing between 20 and 30 lakh workers. He pointed out that despite their hard work, many employees survive on meagre wages, struggling to make ends meet. He demanded an immediate hike in salaries to ensure a dignified living for these workers.
Beyond better pay, the protest also called for basic amenities. Narayana stressed that workers should receive snacks in the morning and evening, and proper lunch arrangements should be provided during work hours. He emphasised that ensuring such facilities is crucial not only for the workers’ well-being but also for the smooth functioning of petrol pumps, which serve millions of customers daily.
The protest in Tirupati drew attention to the larger nationwide issue of labour welfare in essential services. Narayana appealed to both private operators and government authorities to take immediate steps to address these concerns.
