The Andhra Pradesh government has temporarily postponed the proposals for Greater Vijayawada and Greater Tirupati. Municipal Administration Minister Narayana announced the decision on Saturday.
The minister said the state is facing administrative challenges in granting Greater status to Vijayawada and Tirupati. He explained that the Central government has instructed states not to carry out delimitation or municipal mergers until the national census is completed.
Minister Narayana stated that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the matter in detail. The Chief Minister felt that merging municipal limits before the census could create serious complications. Based on this assessment, the government decided to delay the proposals.
“The government will take a final decision on Greater Vijayawada and Greater Tirupati only after the census is completed,” Narayana clarified.
He added that the state remains committed to urban development. However, it will strictly follow constitutional rules and Central guidelines before moving forward.
The postponement has drawn public attention, as both Vijayawada and Tirupati were expected to gain Greater city status to improve infrastructure and civic administration.
