Strict rules spark debate in China

A village in Lincang district of Yunnan province, China, has drawn national attention after imposing strict fines for premarital pregnancy, cohabitation, and marriage practices. The rules, displayed on a public board, triggered widespread debate on social media before authorities removed it.

Village elders said they introduced the measures to protect traditional family values and morality.

Fine for pregnancy before and soon after marriage

According to the board, women who become pregnant before marriage must pay a fine of 3,000 yuan (around ₹38,472). In addition, the same fine applies if a woman gives birth within 10 months of marriage, which elders claim indicates premarital conception.

The announcement quickly went viral, with many questioning its legality and social impact.

Penalty for cohabitation without marriage

The rules also target couples living together without marriage. As per the resolution, unmarried couples who cohabit must pay 500 yuan (around ₹6,000) every year. Village leaders believe such arrangements threaten traditional customs.

Moreover, the elders stated that cohabitation has become common in cities and should not spread to rural areas.

Fines for marriage, disputes, and behavior

The board further mentioned that marrying someone from another region or neighboring state would attract a fine of 1,500 yuan (around ₹19,000). Additionally, if couples bring personal disputes to village elders, both partners must pay 500 yuan each.

The rules also impose fines ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 yuan for alcohol-related fights. Meanwhile, spreading rumors or making false accusations can result in penalties between 500 and 1,000 yuan.

Board removed after backlash

Soon after photos of the board circulated online, the issue sparked criticism across China. Following the backlash, the board was removed from outside the village office.

However, the incident has reignited discussions about personal freedom, rural governance, and traditional values in modern China.
