Rumours about the demonetisation of ₹500 currency notes have triggered concern across the country. Several social media posts claim that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will remove ₹500 notes from ATMs by March 2026. However, the Union government has now issued a clear clarification, calling these claims false and misleading.

Viral Claim Creates Confusion

In recent days, posts on platforms like Facebook and X (Twitter) suggested that ₹500 notes would soon disappear from circulation. The messages claimed that the RBI planned to stop issuing these notes and invalidate them after March. As a result, many people began questioning the future of cash transactions in India.

PIB Fact Check Busts the Myth

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check, the government’s official fact-checking agency, stepped in to address the rumours. It categorically stated that reports about the demonetisation of ₹500 notes are completely fake. According to PIB, the RBI has made no announcement regarding the withdrawal or invalidation of ₹500 notes.

The Centre also warned citizens not to trust unverified social media claims that spread panic and misinformation.

What RBI Has Actually Said

The RBI regularly reviews its currency management and note recycling policies. However, such reviews do not indicate the removal of any specific denomination. Officials clarified that these routine processes should not be confused with demonetisation decisions.

At present, ₹500 notes remain legal tender across India. Banks continue to issue them, and people can freely use them for all transactions.

No Demonetisation Decision So Far

Importantly, the RBI has not taken any decision to demonetise ₹500 notes. The central bank has also not issued any notification suggesting changes to their circulation. Experts advise citizens to rely only on official RBI or government announcements for accurate information.

Public Urged to Ignore Fake News

The government has once again urged people to verify claims before sharing them online. Misinformation related to currency can cause unnecessary fear and financial confusion.

Bottom line: ₹500 notes are safe, valid, and fully in circulation. Any claim suggesting otherwise is nothing but fake news.
