A major theft shocked devotees at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga of Srikakulam district on Monday. Unknown persons entered the temple through a rear door and stole gold and silver ornaments, creating panic among locals.

According to temple trustee Mukundapanda, the stolen jewellery is worth nearly ₹60 lakh. As soon as the theft came to light, he informed the Kasibugga police. Soon after, police registered a case and began an investigation.

Meanwhile, Kasibugga DSP Shaik Sahabaj Ahmed and CI Ramakrishna reached the temple and inspected the spot. Police teams are now checking CCTV footage from nearby areas. In addition, they are collecting technical evidence to identify the suspects. Officials believe the thieves planned the crime and took advantage of low activity at the temple.

Earlier, the temple remained closed to devotees since November 1 after a tragic stampede claimed nine lives. Following the incident, police stopped darshan for safety reasons. At present, renovation and development works are underway at the temple.

However, the theft has raised serious concerns about temple security during closure periods. Therefore, devotees and local residents have demanded tighter security and round-the-clock surveillance. Police assured that they are working actively to recover the stolen ornaments and arrest those responsible at the earliest.
