The Vijayawada West Bypass has partially opened to the public, marking a major step in improving regional road connectivity. As a Sankranthi gift, authorities opened one side of the bypass road from Kaja in Mangalagiri mandal to Peda Avutapalli. This move has already begun easing traffic pressure around Vijayawada city.
Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) inaugurated the road with traditional rituals. First, they allowed official vehicles to pass through the stretch. Soon after, they opened the road for public use. At present, authorities permit all categories of vehicles on this route. As a result, commuters are experiencing smoother and faster travel.
Strategic Link Between National Highways
The Vijayawada West Bypass plays a key role in connecting National Highway-16, which runs from Chennai to Kolkata, with National Highway-65 linking Vijayawada and Hyderabad. Because of this connection, vehicles coming from Guntur can now avoid entering Vijayawada city. Instead, they can travel directly toward Amaravati, Hyderabad, or Eluru.
Moreover, this bypass helps reduce heavy vehicle movement inside the city. Consequently, traffic congestion within Vijayawada is expected to decline significantly. Officials believe this change will also improve road safety and reduce travel delays.
Second Carriageway to Open by March
Meanwhile, NHAI officials confirmed that work on the second side of the bypass is progressing steadily. According to them, authorities plan to open the remaining stretch by March. Once both sides become operational, officials will begin toll collection near Venkatapalem.
The entire bypass measures nearly 48 kilometers in length. Engineers are developing it as a six-lane highway to support future traffic growth. Therefore, the road will accommodate both local and long-distance traffic efficiently.
Long-Term Relief for Vijayawada Traffic
Once fully completed, the Vijayawada West Bypass will offer a long-term solution to the city’s traffic problems. In addition, it will improve freight movement and strengthen links between major economic centers. Experts say the project will also support regional development across Andhra Pradesh.
Overall, the partial opening of the Vijayawada West Bypass marks an important milestone. With faster connectivity, reduced congestion, and better road infrastructure, the project promises lasting benefits for commuters and businesses alike.
