Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly backed fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, urging Team India to include him in the playing XI for the crucial third ODI against New Zealand. The three-match ODI series currently stands level at 1-1, setting the stage for a decisive clash in Indore on January 18.
India began the series on a positive note by winning the first ODI in Vadodara by four wickets. However, New Zealand bounced back in the second match at Rajkot with a convincing seven-wicket victory. Despite the pressure situation, the Indian team management continued to keep Arshdeep Singh on the bench in both matches, which has sparked debate among former cricketers and fans alike.
Reacting to this decision, Ashwin shared his views on his YouTube channel. He clearly stated that Arshdeep deserves at least one opportunity in the series. According to Ashwin, the team management must stop rotating bowlers endlessly without rewarding consistent performers.
Ashwin pointed out that pacers Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana need match practice. However, he argued that conditions against New Zealand differ from those against South Africa, where hit-the-deck bowlers usually thrive. Therefore, he believes Arshdeep’s skill set suits the current opposition better.
“The competition among bowlers remains intense. Still, Arshdeep has already proven himself whenever he gets the ball,” Ashwin said. He added that the left-arm pacer continues to fight for a spot despite delivering results consistently.
Moreover, Ashwin raised concerns about player confidence. He questioned why selectors sidelined Arshdeep for two straight matches. He warned that such decisions could hurt a player’s morale. Interestingly, Ashwin also highlighted a pattern. He noted that bowlers often face frequent rotation, while batters enjoy longer runs despite poor form.
“I support Arshdeep because he performs every time the captain hands him the ball,” Ashwin emphasized. He firmly stated that Arshdeep has earned his place in the playing XI and deserves backing during important matches.
As India prepares for the series decider, Ashwin’s comments have added pressure on the team management. Now, all eyes remain on whether Team India will finally hand Arshdeep Singh an opportunity in the third ODI.
