The Andhra Pradesh government has announced a major relief for fishermen by increasing accidental death insurance to ₹10 lakh. The decision aims to protect families that depend entirely on fishing for survival.
Higher Compensation Under PMMSY
Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the state has raised the insurance amount from ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh. The enhanced cover will apply only to fishermen who lose their lives due to accidents while fishing at sea.
Earlier, families received ₹2 lakh as compensation. However, the government felt the amount did not match the risks involved in marine fishing.
Separate Aid for Non-Accidental Deaths
The government clarified that the ₹10 lakh insurance applies only to fishing-related accidents. In contrast, families of fishermen who die due to natural causes or other incidents will receive ₹2 lakh compensation through the Labour Department.
Eligibility Criteria Clearly Defined
To receive the benefit, fishermen must meet strict conditions. They must hold a valid fishing licence and maintain membership in a fishermen cooperative society. Boat crew members also need to register their names with the Fisheries Department.
Documents Needed to Claim Insurance
Eligible families must submit Aadhaar cards, death certificates, ration cards, and panchanama reports. They must also provide proof of cooperative membership and a society resolution. Authorities will accept applications at district fisheries offices and Rythu Seva Kendras.
Continued Welfare Measures for Fishermen
The AP government already supports fishermen through financial aid during fishing ban periods. It also provides subsidies for boats, nets, and engines. With the new insurance hike, the government has strengthened long-term security for fishing families.
Officials urged fishermen to complete registrations and ensure eligibility. They said the scheme would offer timely financial support during difficult times.
