The much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper train has finally been rolled out on Indian Railways’ network. Along with its launch, the Railway Ministry has introduced stricter ticket cancellation rules, making them significantly different from those of regular mail and express trains. Passengers are advised to carefully understand these rules before booking or cancelling tickets.

No Refund If Cancelled Within 8 Hours

Under the revised Railway Passengers Rules, 2015, Vande Bharat Sleeper tickets carry tighter refund conditions. Unlike conventional trains, where partial refunds are available even up to four hours before departure, the sleeper version of Vande Bharat follows a tougher policy.

If a passenger cancels a ticket within eight hours of the scheduled departure, no refund will be issued. This marks a major shift in railway cancellation norms.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Cancellation Charges

The Railway Ministry has clearly defined slab-wise cancellation charges for this premium sleeper service:

  • More than 72 hours before departure: 25% of the ticket fare will be deducted

  • Between 72 hours and 8 hours: 50% of the ticket fare will be deducted

  • Less than 8 hours: No refund will be given

These rules apply uniformly across all classes on the Vande Bharat Sleeper train.

How It Differs From Regular Trains

In contrast, cancellation rules for ordinary mail and express trains are more flexible. Charges depend on the class of travel, and refunds are allowed up to four hours before departure.

For cancellations made 48 hours in advance, the charges are:

  • AC First Class / Executive Class: ₹240 + GST

  • AC 2 Tier: ₹200 + GST

  • AC 3 Tier / Chair Car: ₹180 + GST

  • Sleeper Class: ₹120

  • Second Class: ₹60

From 48 to 12 hours, 25% of the fare is deducted. Between 12 and 4 hours, the deduction rises to 50%. No refund is issued if cancelled within four hours.

No RAC Facility on Vande Bharat Sleeper

Another major change is the absence of RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) on the Vande Bharat Sleeper train. Only passengers with confirmed tickets can travel. Waiting list and partially confirmed tickets are not permitted.

All berths are made available from the advance reservation period of 60 days. The train includes quotas for women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. However, other special quotas are not applicable.

Lower Berth Allocation and Minimum Fare

The system automatically allocates lower berths to women above 45 years and men above 60 years, subject to availability. Additionally, passengers travelling less than 400 km must still pay a minimum fare of ₹960 for Third AC.

With these new rules, Indian Railways aims to ensure better seat utilization and disciplined bookings for its premium sleeper service. Passengers planning to travel on the Vande Bharat Sleeper are advised to plan cancellations carefully to avoid financial loss.
