Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the people of Anantapuram district in Andhra Pradesh for their community-led water conservation efforts during his latest Mann Ki Baat address. He highlighted how residents transformed severe drought conditions into an opportunity for sustainable water management through collective action and determination.
Anantapuram has long faced acute water scarcity due to its dry climate, red sandy soil, and irregular rainfall. Moreover, prolonged droughts have made agriculture and daily life challenging for residents across many mandals. However, instead of waiting for solutions, local communities decided to act.
To address the crisis, villagers came together to clean and restore traditional water bodies in their regions. With support from the government machinery, they launched the “Anantha Neeru Samrakshana Project”, a community-driven initiative focused on water resource revival. As a result, more than ten ponds and reservoirs have been rejuvenated so far.
In addition, the initiative placed strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. Over 7,000 saplings were planted around restored water bodies, which helped improve groundwater retention and local ecology. These efforts also created awareness about long-term water conservation among rural communities.
Prime Minister Modi described Anantapuram’s model as an inspiration for drought-prone regions across the country. He noted that when public participation aligns with administrative support, meaningful change becomes possible even in the most challenging conditions.
By recognising Anantapuram on a national platform, the Prime Minister underlined the power of grassroots action. Ultimately, the district’s journey stands as a reminder that sustainable solutions often begin at the community level.
