A Bombardier Challenger 650 private jet crashed during takeoff at Bangor International Airport in Maine on Sunday night, causing panic and flight disruptions. The accident occurred around 7:45 PM local time when the aircraft lost control on the runway, overturned, and caught fire. As a result, thick smoke spread across the airport area while emergency teams rushed to the spot.
At the time of the crash, eight people were travelling on the business jet. The aircraft, registered as N10KJ, belongs to a Houston-based company. Following the incident, airport authorities immediately suspended all flight operations to ensure passenger safety. Meanwhile, fire crews quickly controlled the blaze and prevented further damage.
However, severe weather conditions appear to have played a major role in the accident. Winter Storm Fern battered the region with heavy snowfall, poor visibility, and freezing temperatures that dropped to nearly minus 16 degrees Celsius. Due to these conditions, investigators believe the jet struggled to maintain stability during takeoff.
Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board began a joint investigation at the crash site. Officials are examining weather data, runway conditions, and aircraft systems to identify the exact cause. In addition, they aim to determine whether technical issues contributed to the crash along with the extreme weather.
Until inspections are completed, authorities will keep airport operations under review. More clarity is expected once investigators release their preliminary report.
