Indian nationals continue to face growing risks at the United States border, with official data showing that nearly 65 Indians are arrested every day, equal to one detention every 20 minutes. Although overall arrests declined in 2025, the high presence of Indians among undocumented migrants has raised serious concerns for U.S. authorities.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a total of 23,830 Indians were detained between January and December 2025. This number dropped sharply from 85,119 arrests in 2024, yet enforcement agencies say the trend remains troubling due to the steady daily inflow.

Search for Jobs Drives Migration

Most migrants attempt to cross the border in search of better employment opportunities and higher wages. Economic pressure, rising living costs, and limited local prospects continue to push many Indians toward illegal migration routes.

However, officials have expressed growing alarm over the increase in unaccompanied children among those detained. Authorities say minors face extreme danger during these journeys, prompting stronger border monitoring.

Canada Emerges as New Transit Route

As U.S. enforcement tightened traditional paths through Mexico, migrants began changing routes. Since 2025, many Indians started travelling via Canada, often reaching North America through international hubs such as Dubai and Istanbul.

When authorities blocked these channels, migrants turned to more dangerous and illegal alternatives, increasing the risk of exploitation and fatal accidents.

Trump Administration Intensifies Crackdown

The rise in enforcement directly aligns with President Donald Trump’s renewed immigration crackdown. His administration has suspended visa processing for 75 countries while increasing border patrol activity and detention operations.

Officials warn that stricter controls could further push migrants into unsafe routes rather than stopping attempts entirely.

Growing Warning for Aspirants

Experts urge aspiring migrants to avoid illegal crossings and seek legal immigration pathways instead. Authorities continue to warn that risky journeys often lead to arrest, detention, or worse.

As border controls strengthen, the consequences of unauthorised migration remain severe and unpredictable.
