Airports across several Asian countries have reintroduced COVID-style health screenings for passengers arriving from West Bengal amid growing concerns over the possible spread of the Nipah virus. The precautionary measures come ahead of the busy Chinese New Year travel season, which officials fear could accelerate cross-border transmission if the situation worsens.

Countries including Thailand, Nepal, and Taiwan have started enhanced screening protocols at international airports. Health authorities have increased thermal checks, symptom monitoring, and traveller surveillance to prevent any potential outbreak. Officials say early detection remains the most effective way to limit the virus from spreading internationally.

Why Asian Countries Are on High Alert

The upcoming Chinese New Year has triggered additional concern among health agencies. During this period, millions of people travel across Asia, raising the risk of infectious diseases spreading rapidly. Authorities want to avoid a repeat of pandemic-style situations and are taking preventive steps before case numbers rise.

Although no widespread international transmission has been reported so far, governments prefer caution. Health departments across the region remain in constant coordination and continue to monitor developments closely.

What Makes the Nipah Virus Dangerous

The Nipah virus is one of the most deadly zoonotic diseases known. It spreads from animals such as bats and pigs to humans. In some cases, it also spreads through close human-to-human contact. Medical experts warn that social interaction without precautions can increase the risk of infection.

The virus has a high mortality rate ranging between 45% and 75%, making it far more dangerous than many common viral infections. Because no specific vaccine or cure exists, early detection and isolation play a crucial role in controlling outbreaks.

Symptoms and Incubation Period

People infected with the Nipah virus often develop symptoms such as fever, headaches, and breathing difficulties. As the illness progresses, patients may suffer brain swelling, seizures, and loss of consciousness. In severe cases, the disease can lead to coma within days.

The incubation period usually lasts between 4 and 14 days, but doctors have recorded cases where symptoms appeared after as long as 45 days. This long incubation window complicates tracking and containment efforts.

Long-Term Health Impact on Survivors

Even after recovery, survivors may not fully escape the virus’s effects. Many experience long-term neurological problems, including recurring seizures and noticeable personality changes. Doctors stress the importance of continuous medical monitoring for recovered patients.

Authorities Urge Vigilance, Not Panic

Health officials across Asia urge travellers to remain alert but calm. They recommend following hygiene guidelines, reporting symptoms early, and cooperating with airport screening teams. Governments say preparedness and public awareness can prevent panic while ensuring safety.

As global travel increases, authorities continue to balance caution with continuity, hoping early preventive steps will keep the situation under control.
