A festive mood prevailed along the Visakhapatnam coast after fishermen released from a Bangladesh jail returned home safely. Their arrival brought relief and joy to families who had waited for months. The fishermen reached India after sustained diplomatic efforts by the central and Andhra Pradesh governments.
Detained After Crossing the Sea Border
The incident dates back to September last year. While out at sea for fishing, nine fishermen from Visakhapatnam accidentally crossed international maritime boundaries. As a result, the Bangladesh Coast Guard detained them. Later, authorities lodged them in Bagerhat jail, where they remained for nearly three months.
Diplomatic Efforts Secure Their Release
Meanwhile, continuous discussions between the Indian government and the Bangladesh authorities helped resolve the issue. Due to these efforts, officials secured the release of all nine fishermen. Along with them, a total of 23 Indian fishermen also returned home safely.
Warm Welcome at Fishing Harbour
Once the fishermen reached the Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour, officials gave them a warm welcome. District administration members, fisheries department officials, and leaders of fishermen associations greeted them. Authorities enquired about their health and living conditions during detention.
Medical Aid and Support Provided
Moreover, officials arranged medical check-ups and transport for the fishermen. Necessary assistance was extended to ensure their safe return to their villages. Families, overwhelmed with emotion, broke down in tears as they reunited with their loved ones.
The safe return of the fishermen once again highlighted the importance of coordination, diplomacy, and maritime safety awareness for coastal communities.
