Tension gripped Hindupur in Sri Sathya Sai district after police opened fire during an operation to arrest a most-wanted accused linked to a sensational gang rape case. The incident took place in the Errakonda forest area, where police traced the movement of rowdy sheeter Nagendra, the prime accused in the Chilamathur mother-in-law and daughter-in-law gang rape case that shocked the state.
According to police officials, a special team launched a search operation after receiving credible inputs about Nagendra’s presence in the forest region. When officers attempted to detain him, Nagendra allegedly attacked the team with a knife in a bid to escape. During the attack, a constable and Circle Inspector Anjaneyulu suffered injuries.
As Nagendra tried to flee the scene, police issued warnings and later fired at him to prevent his escape. One bullet hit Nagendra in the leg, bringing the chase to an end. Officers immediately shifted him to a hospital under tight security.
Police sources revealed that Nagendra is a hardened criminal with a long history of offences. He reportedly faces around 90 criminal cases across Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, including serious charges such as assault, robbery, and sexual crimes.
Following the firing incident, security was tightened in Hindupur and the surrounding areas. Police continue further investigation into the case and are verifying Nagendra’s involvement in other pending crimes.
