The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced new traffic arrangements on the Vijayawada bypass to ease congestion. From the evening of the 10th of this month, authorities will allow two-wheelers and four-wheelers coming from the Gollapudi side to travel up to Highland Road.
This change aims to improve traffic flow for vehicles moving toward Guntur and reduce pressure on internal city routes.
Current Traffic Movement on the Bypass
At present, vehicles cannot move forward after crossing the toll plaza on the bypass. Drivers must exit after crossing the Krishna River and the Seed Access Road. They then enter the Mandadam road to reach the Secretariat and High Court areas.
This diversion has slowed traffic and increased travel time, especially during peak hours. Vehicles heading toward Guntur face repeated bottlenecks due to the limited route options.
New Access Up to Highland Road
Under the revised plan, vehicles travelling from Gollapudi toward Guntur can continue straight on the bypass up to Highland Road. NHAI officials have completed the required road works and traffic arrangements to support this change.
After exiting at Highland Road, commuters can travel about 200 meters and connect to the Chennai–Kolkata service road. From there, vehicles can move smoothly without entering Mandadam or nearby interior roads.
Lorry Movement from the 20th
Authorities will extend the new arrangement to heavy vehicles from the 20th of this month. Lorries coming from Gollapudi will be allowed to move toward Guntur using a regulated route.
These vehicles will directly enter the Chennai–Kolkata National Highway instead of exiting at Highland Road. They will travel a short distance toward Vijayawada and then shift to the service road. At the NRI Hospital junction, drivers must take a U-turn through the underpass and continue toward Guntur before rejoining the main highway.
West Bypass to Open Soon
Officials confirmed that the West Bypass will become fully operational by next month. Once opened, it will further ease traffic congestion around Vijayawada and provide faster connectivity for long-distance travellers.
