India began their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing victory against the United States. The team secured a 29-run win in the opening match played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.
The win gave India an early boost in the mega tournament and highlighted the team’s depth despite early setbacks.
USA Opt to Bowl First
After winning the toss, the United States chose to field. India suffered an early blow when opener Abhishek Sharma returned without scoring. Ishan Kishan showed some intent but managed only 20 runs.
Tilak Varma added 25 runs, but the innings failed to gain momentum. Shivam Dube departed for a duck, leaving India struggling at 46 for four within the powerplay overs.
Suryakumar Yadav Leads India’s Recovery
Suryakumar Yadav played a crucial knock under pressure. He counterattacked the USA bowlers and steadied the innings. The batter scored 84 runs off just 49 balls.
His innings included 10 boundaries and four sixes. Despite his effort, Rinku Singh and Hardik Pandya failed to support him. India finished with 161 runs for nine wickets in the allotted 20 overs.
Indian Pacers Crush USA’s Top Order
The United States failed to get a solid start during the chase. Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh struck early and removed three batters for just 13 runs.
Milind Kumar fought back with 34 runs, while Sanjay Krishnamurthy top-scored with 37. However, the middle order could not handle India’s disciplined bowling attack.
Siraj Shines as USA Falls Short
Mohammed Siraj led the bowling attack with three wickets. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel picked up two wickets each and kept the scoring under control.
The USA managed only 132 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs and fell short of the target. India sealed the match comfortably and secured two important points.
