The suspense over the Mumbai Mayor seat came to an end as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elected its new leadership. Ritu Tawde from the BJP secured the Mayor’s post, while Sanjay Ghadi from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) became the Deputy Mayor. Both leaders were elected unanimously, as the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena did not field any candidates.

This marks a historic shift, ending 25 years of Shiv Sena control over the prestigious Mayor position. It is also the first time in 40 years that the BJP has secured this important post.

Ritu Tawde: From Corporator to Mayor

Ritu Tawde has been elected Mayor of Mumbai for the first time. She has previously won three terms as a corporator and recently secured her seat from the Ghatkopar ward. Tawde has served as the Chairperson of the BMC’s Education Committee in the past. Initially a Congress member, she joined the BJP in 2012.

Tawde becomes the second BJP Mayor of Mumbai, following Prabhakar Pai, who held the post in 1982-83. Her election reflects the BJP’s growing influence in Mumbai’s civic politics.

Sanjay Ghadi: Deputy Mayor for 15 Months

Sanjay Ghadi, elected Deputy Mayor, will hold the position for 15 months. After this term, the Shiv Sena Shinde faction has decided that the post will rotate to another member of their party. Ghadi won from the Magathane ward and had previously been part of the Thackeray faction before switching to the Shinde group ahead of the election.

BJP Emerges as the Largest Party

In the 227-member BMC, the BJP secured 89 seats, emerging as the largest party. Its ally, the Shiv Sena Shinde faction, won 29 seats. With a combined strength of 118 corporators, the BJP-led coalition easily claimed the Mayor’s seat.

The Uddhav Thackeray faction, which ruled the BMC for nearly 25 years since 1997, managed only 65 seats this time. Their allies, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, won six seats, while Sharad Pawar’s NCP secured just one. Due to insufficient numbers, the Thackeray faction did not nominate a mayoral candidate.

Historic Shift in Mumbai Politics

This election marks a major political shift in Mumbai’s civic administration. After decades of dominance by Shiv Sena, the BJP’s victory signals a change in voter sentiment and the balance of power within the city.

With Ritu Tawde as Mayor and Sanjay Ghadi as Deputy Mayor, the BMC now enters a new phase of governance, promising streamlined administration and strategic development for Mumbai’s citizens.
