Claims made by the TDP and JSP that Andhra Pradesh’s economy suffered severe damage during the YSRCP government have come under scrutiny, following the release of new data by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Before and after forming the government, TDP and JSP leaders repeatedly alleged that “Brand AP” was destroyed under YSRCP rule, investors abandoned the state, and industrial growth came to a standstill. However, the latest RBI statistics present a contrasting picture of Andhra Pradesh’s performance between 2019 and 2024.
According to RBI data released this month, Andhra Pradesh recorded strong growth in terms of Gross Value Added (GVA), especially in the manufacturing and industrial sectors.
In manufacturing sector growth, Andhra Pradesh ranked No.1 in South India and No.5 at the national level during the 2019–24 period. Similarly, in overall industry sector growth, the state stood No.1 in South India and No.8 in India during the same timeframe.
Economic analysts note that if the allegations of industrial collapse and investor flight were accurate, such rankings would have been unlikely. Instead, the data suggests that Andhra Pradesh maintained steady industrial momentum and manufacturing expansion despite political criticism.
The figures have reignited debate in political and economic circles, with supporters of the previous government arguing that the RBI data reflects a resilient and growing economy rather than the “destruction of Brand AP” narrative.
As discussions continue, the RBI’s findings are now central to the larger question: did Andhra Pradesh’s economy falter as claimed, or did it experience sustained growth driven by policy and governance during the 2019–24 period?
