Andhra Pradesh is likely to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the next five days, according to the AP weather report released by APSDMA. Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) Managing Director Prakhar Jain revealed that a low-pressure area formed over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area over the same region.

The low-pressure area, moving in a northwest direction, is expected to intensify into a depression by Wednesday afternoon over the Southwest and West-Central Bay of Bengal, adjacent to the North Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh coasts.  The system may further intensify in the next 24 hours, he added, advising fishermen not to venture into the sea till Saturday.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema districts are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday.

Strong winds with speeds of 35–55 kmph are likely to blow along the South Coastal Andhra region. Prakhar Jain said the administration has already alerted officials in the affected districts.

APSDMA issues safety advisory to people

People in need of emergency assistance should contact the Disaster Management Authority control room toll-free numbers: 112, 1070, 18004250101. The authorities advise the public to avoid staying under trees, large hoardings, or near dilapidated structures. They also urge residents in low-lying areas to take precautions and avoid crossing overflowing streams, canals, and roads.

According to the APSDMA press release on Tuesday, some areas of Prakasam, Nellore, and Tirupati districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in other districts.
On Thursday, the weather department expects heavy to very heavy rainfall in some parts of Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts. It also forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Rayalaseema.

As of 5 pm on Tuesday, the rainfall recorded is as follows:

  • Chilamathur (Tirupati district) – 79 mm
  • Atmakur (Nellore district) – 77.2 mm
  • Mannarpoluru (Tirupati district) – 69.7 mm
  • Gollagunta – 68.5 mm
  • Papamambapuram – 64.5 mm
  • Konduru – 63 mm
  • Venkatagiri – 57 mm
