Missing Since 1997, Family Assumed He Was Dead

In a shocking incident linked to the Special Voters’ List Revision (SIR), a man believed to be dead for nearly three decades returned to his hometown alive. The incident took place in Khatauli town of Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, and has stunned local residents.

Sharif Ahmed, now 79, went missing in 1997. After the death of his first wife, he married again and moved to West Bengal. Soon after, he lost contact with his family. Despite repeated efforts, relatives failed to trace him. Eventually, they assumed he had died.

Voter List Amendment Triggers Unexpected Return

Recently, the Election Commission began a Special Voters’ List Revision in West Bengal. As a result, many migrant workers returned to their native places to collect old identity documents.

Similarly, Sharif Ahmed had to travel back to Khatauli to retrieve proof of identity. On December 29, he suddenly appeared at his old house. His unexpected arrival shocked relatives, who had believed he was no longer alive.

Emotional Reunion After Nearly Three Decades

When Sharif returned, he learned that his father and brother had passed away during his absence. Overcome with emotion, he broke down in tears. At the same time, his family members struggled to believe what they were seeing.

“It felt like a miracle,” said his nephew Wasim Ahmed. “We never imagined we would see him again after 29 years.”

Sharif’s four daughters, who had grown up believing their father was dead, were also informed about his return.

Returns to Bengal After Completing Formalities

After collecting the required documents, Sharif Ahmed returned to Medinipur district in West Bengal. However, his story has sparked widespread discussion about how voter list revisions can unexpectedly reconnect broken families.

This rare incident highlights how administrative processes can sometimes change lives in the most unexpected ways.
