Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh have raised serious concerns ahead of the upcoming national elections scheduled next month. In response, Hindu organisations have urged the Election Commission to provide additional security measures to ensure safe voting for minority communities.

Demand for Extra Protection During Polls

Leaders of Hindu associations met officials of the Bangladesh Election Commission and expressed fear over the current law-and-order situation. They said rising violence against minorities has created an atmosphere of insecurity, especially in sensitive regions. The organisations demanded special polling booths for Hindu voters in vulnerable areas so they can exercise their franchise without fear.

The groups also asked authorities to deploy additional security forces in regions where minority attacks have increased. According to them, free and fair elections remain impossible unless voters feel safe at polling stations. They stressed that constitutional rights must remain protected, regardless of religion or political climate.

Rising Violence Raises Alarm

Tensions escalated further after unidentified assailants shot dead student leader Usman Hadi in a recent incident, which triggered widespread protests across the country. Following the unrest, reports of attacks on Hindu households and places of worship surfaced in several districts. Over the past few weeks, dozens of Hindus reportedly lost their lives, intensifying anxiety among minority communities.

Bangladesh will go to polls on February 12, with political uncertainty already running high. The Awami League has opted out of the election process, while the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus continues to oversee the transition. Amid this backdrop, minority groups fear exclusion and violence during the polling process.

As election day approaches, human rights groups and minority organisations are closely watching the Election Commission’s response. Their demands underline the need for strong security arrangements to ensure peaceful and inclusive elections across Bangladesh.
