A fresh report by a leading US think tank has triggered widespread discussion after warning of a possible military conflict between India and Pakistan in 2026. The report, released by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), is based on a survey of American foreign policy experts.

US Think Tank Flags Rising Tensions

According to the CFR’s Conflict Watch 2026 report, escalating terrorist activities in the region could increase the risk of armed conflict between India and Pakistan. The report states that while such a conflict may have a limited direct impact on US interests, it remains a serious concern for South Asia’s stability.

The CFR also noted that Pakistan could face security challenges on multiple fronts, including tensions with Afghanistan, adding to regional instability.

Background of Recent Developments

The report comes in the backdrop of heightened tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack, after which India launched Operation Sindoor. As part of the operation, Indian forces reportedly targeted Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed camps across Pakistan. Following this, India responded strongly when Pakistan attempted retaliation, striking multiple Pakistani air bases.

Security Alert in Jammu and Kashmir

Intelligence agencies have warned of possible infiltration attempts by terrorists during winter, taking advantage of snow-covered terrain in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources suggest that over 30 terrorists may already be active in the Jammu region. As a result, security forces have intensified anti-terror operations despite harsh weather conditions.

Defence Preparedness on Both Sides

Despite an ongoing ceasefire, both India and Pakistan are strengthening their defence capabilities. India recently approved defence purchases worth ₹79,000 crore, including drones, guided bombs, and air-to-air missiles. Meanwhile, Pakistan has reportedly initiated talks with China and Turkey to procure drones and air defence systems.

The CFR report concludes that without sustained diplomatic efforts, the risk of escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours cannot be ruled out.
