Former President Donald Trump on Friday suggested that Washington’s ties with India and Russia have weakened, saying the United States has “lost” both countries to the influence of China.

Trump’s comments came shortly after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared together at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin, China.

Trump posted on Truth Social a photo of the three leaders at the summit, writing: “It seems we’ve lost India and Russia to the depths of shadowy China. Wishing them a fruitful journey ahead! – President Donald J. Trump.”

India’s Ministry of External Affairs declined to comment Friday when asked about Trump’s remarks.

Relations between the United States and India have been strained in recent months. Trump last month imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. He has also proposed a 145% tariff on China, though that plan has been delayed for 90 days.

Analysts say Trump’s tariff policies and sharp rhetoric toward Modi’s government are pushing India closer to Russia and China, who are seeking to counter U.S. influence. Indian officials have framed the shift as part of a “new chapter of multipolarity and global cooperation,” which some view as a challenge to the U.S.-led order that emerged after the Cold War.
